In the heart of Amsterdam’s Rivierenbuurt, a former school building has been transformed into a collection of distinctive residential apartments. For one of these unique homes, Studio JAAF designed an interior that honours the building’s architectural heritage while giving it a bold, personal character.

Original features such as high ceilings, stained glass, and detailing in the style of the Amsterdamse School formed the foundation of the design. These elements were embraced and used as anchors to build upon.

The spatial layout was reimagined to improve flow and function, with custom built-ins that subtly define living zones while maintaining the openness of the original volume. A deliberate use of bold colours, expressive patterns and curated artworks introduces contrast, bringing personality to the structured architecture.

This project reflects Studio JAAF’s vision: the thoughtful transformation of historical architecture into meaningful, livable spaces with bold character.
